Team Tournament: Game Two

In game two Whit and I played... the Mighty Mighty Carlos and the Professor.

Yup.  We drove two hours to play dudes we play all the time.  It was basically Game 4 of the practice series.  It sucked, frankly.

What sucked worse is it was a random draw!  The TO wasn't doing a Swiss but was randomizing the games between rounds.  There's a reason that system isn't used... *foreshadowing*

The game was Kill Points and Objectives.  We got the half we wanted and our deployment couldn't have worked out better.  We divided our army: here's the left flank.

Here's the right.  The 'Bearers are holding our objective.  The  Oblits have the best possible view.  They'll never have a better game than this!

The Professor has his junk on the table.  Those red Marines aren't on.  Carlos deep-striked into the backfield with one unit and jumped on from reserve with his toughest unit, including the Libby and Priest.

Here's a better view.  The combat squad will end up in combat with the 'Bearers, which they'll eventually win, but the remainder will be put down.  The other squad...

...is shot up by three Plasma Cannon shots, fails a bunch of saves AND the Leadership test... and run off the board.  Yes Professor, that's appropriate!

Another combat squad tries to kill the Daemon Prince.  Nope, it doesn't work.  The Oblits will kill them too!  The Professor gets a unit in from Reserve and follows the same path the Flesh Tearers took.

The rest of our army is in.  The Daemon Prince moves to help out the 'Bearers.  The rest of the Professor's army is in, so it's one big mass moving toward the objective.  Frankly, it was the only move - the other objective was too strongly held.

An Oblit's Eye view!

Now that everything is on, the left flank is oversupported.  They start moving right but the game will be over before anyone gets anywhere.

Whit is shooting more Marines.  The rest of the army protects the objective and awaits the inevitable Blood Angel push.

Feel No Pain is amazing.

He jumped in and attacked Fiends, but do to charging into cover the Fiends had the advantage.  They did well enough to survive, then used Hit and Run to reposition for another shot at the Marines.  The idea was to Lash them into a sweet spot and shoot them up some more, before charging in to finish them off... part of it worked!  The Lash was dispelled from the Psychic Hood, but the rest went okay.
I'm sure it's obvious, but the game became one-sided after the lucky break-check which took out a big chunk of the Mighty Mighty Carlos' army.

To be honest, it wasn't that fun a game.  The conclusion was pretty obvious pretty quickly, but because it's a tournament me and Whit had to keep rubbing it in for points.  That sucked.

Almost as much as driving a bunch of hours to play your friends!  That's understandable if it's a Swiss or some other comparable system, but it didn't feel so cool in a randomized game environment.

I don't want to bag on the store too much - the first tournament I played there was awesome and they did everything right.  This tournament... not so much, but after giving it some thought I decided it could very well be the nature of the team event that through them off.

More on that another time, methinks.

This used to happen to me and my gaming group. Usually we'd be like 'We know whos gonna win- so lets just BS for a few minutes then go get an extra long lunch!'

It does kinda suck though since you know someone is basically getting knocked out of the running. Its worth talking to the TO's about- usually if you tell them you drove that far just so you could play different people they'll work with you.

(A new favorite!) Anon: I haven’t even bothered playing a game of 6th yet, cause I have read the rules, and actually understand how they interact with units. I know my armies no longer function how they should, and so I need to change them.

I think, therefore I blog.

Not Brent has been spotted lurking around with a green marker.

He's not like a bad guy from a cartoon, all devious but never quite evil, Not Brent is bad beans, man, bad beans.

On Internet Advice: You see, I have an almost religious belief that's it's a huge, colossal waste of time.

...I think I'll call it the Gun Shy Pattern Stormbuster, because after the Internet destroyed my first humble effort, I find I'm a bit worried about the reaction to this one.

I prefer the term Internet Personality (or IP) myself, seeing as how I coined it.

Lauby: "Your attempt to humanize him as failed. I feel nothing but scorn for his beard - it's like a warcrime or something."

BBF: "I've always thought you are a good player but I finally figured out that you are a great player. It's hard to see sometimes because your personality is engaging, sincere and quite charming - to me that is kind of a rare combination."

'Clearly cheating?' I didn't misspeak: you jumped to conclusions. If you'd like to apologize I'll be happy to send you an autographed picture of my ass.
