A Cup and a Chaos Knight

Here's my Empty Blue Digital Headache dice cup complete with Avatar lid.  There were a lot of positive comments on Bell today, so I went and took a picture of my cup, which wasn't in the article.  You could say Big Whit and the boys are locked in to this kind of work.

Here's the BSMoove recipe Chaos Knight Mark II.  I think it's getting there... what do you fine folks (and the MM(esno)) think?  It's not quite done but it's close enough that you can draw judgement.

I am not sure I what to think about being called out like that...hmm. Is it a good idea to poke the bear?

Ok, I think the paint you have applied looks good. I think it is a great start.

I am not terribly happy with some of the color choices. First off, there are two different color of metal on this model. The chain...and EVERYTHING else!!

I am curious what exactly you are going for? Do you want this to look like steel/iron that is rusted so severely that every surface is rusted, or do you want it to look like a bronze color metal that has rusted spots? If it is completely rusted steel/iron then you should not have the orange color mixed in. If it is a colored metal then I am not sure everything the same color is the right path. So that is the reason for the comment about paint you applied being looking good.

Also, I am not entirely sure about the placing of the bright rust spots. Think about how rust normally forms. Water hits the surface and then runs and pools in lower area or creases and crevices. Where the water stands and pools are the places that rust first. They would also be the areas that rust the most.

Second, the green straps hanging down. Not trying to be mean but what is your affinity for colored leather? Is it that you don't like to paint brown leather? Are you trying to bring some color into the area where the leather is? It is a common theme I see on a lot of the minis you paint. In almost every case it really detracts from what is normally a good paint job. I just think you try to force color into a model in the wrong place. If you want green on the model why not choose one of the symbols on the shield, rear haunches. I did notice that you added yellow into it this time instead of white to highlight but it is a bit too much.

Also, I am not entirely sure about the placing of the rust spots.

Overall it is a good start but I think there is just too much on the same color. If I was painting this model I would most likely have three different colors of metal. The knights armor, the barding, and then the chain-mail. To me I also normally try to think about the model as a living being/creature. Although a being/creature touched by chaos may not take great care of his armor, he would still use it and it would have area where there is no rust, or wear back down to the base metal.

Well, sometimes it's the only way to get you to comment!

I'm doing homework now, so I'll comment later (also, I need to read your advice a bit closer).

Anyone else? Have at it folks, this is an experiment! You won't hurt my feelings.

The Dyson Pattern Storm Buster did all that in...

I am most certainly biased in this matter, but I think he looks effing brilliant.

I agree with MM in that I wouldn't chose colored leather myself, but I must also say that I think it works here. The contrast between these two colors are fantastic. If you were to paint the leather a brown color, it would get lost or otherwise muddy the brown/rust that you've already painted. So. No brown straps for leather. I don't know. Maybe straight black -or, if you must, perhaps a deep brown with purple/black wash. I'm not saying. I'm just saying.

With regard to the two different metals, I think the trick is to work with the same rust recipe, but give the chain, and perhaps the chainmail on the barding, a bit more silver to make it look a bit more naturally varnished from friction, etc.

Again. Biased.
... but I love him.

I've been really "obsessed" with value after reading an article on CMON a couple of days ago. In regards to your photo/miniature, your value is single tonal. Even though in color you have greens, yellows, rust (in red and orange), and silver.

I would say bring in some darker value into your mini. Good places I see would be the green straps, the eye, the shield, and the emblem on the top of his helmet.

I Grayscaled your photo in Photoshop to give you a good visual here...

There's a "by the power of grayscale" joke here that I refuse to make.

Hey Brent!

I've seen a few of those dice cups on eBay in the past, but never won one. Haven't seen one in a while. Are your friends still making them? I'd love to order some if so!

Brent, I really like the way the Knight turned out. The green leather works, although it would not have been my first choice. That said I am at a loss for what other color I might use.

Cool, I was wondering what your cup looked like.

And, again, link please. Must posses, and all. *laugh*
