Jetbike Basing: Tipping Over the Paradigm

I have a Jetbike question:  what size bases do Jetbike use?

Fritz, of the Way of Saimhann, among many others, uses the Terminator-sized base, which is basically the smaller clear flying base which I know Jetbikes used to be packaged with.  Now, however, they are packaged with the larger size clear base.  I know - I bought 10 not three months ago.

I didn't take my Council to BOLSCON last year for fear they were incorrectly mounted (I, too, used the Terminator bases) and would be disqualified.  I've since remounted the unit.

From a test-game with my buddy Bruce... who kicked my butt pretty good.  He fed the Council tough nuts and took out the rest of the army around me.  Incidentally, I think he's considering becoming a contributor to this blog.

Let's be honest, the Council plays differently depending on the size of the base; there are good and bad features of both.

Before you discount the question entirely, think about it this way: would you be okay with Destroyers mounted on smaller bases?  Would you think this was 'correct' even if you were cool with it?

On the other hand, Marine bikes mounted on Dreadnought based would seem downright strange, but it's not really correct to mount them on Terminator bases (though I've seen it done).

I'm not trying to be a dick, nor am I suggesting a ton of people need to rebase existing armies, but if this is a real issue and not just mental masturbation I want to know about it.

Any thoughts?

I know that I have stated this before, but I have see pictures of the balscon winner and thought that his army would take up more space on a table than a normal tyranid army. Even though I have heard that he did not take advantage of this I think that if you had to try to get out of the way of that hord of bugs coming after you, then you might have a hard time finding an open spot on the table.

As far as I know, jet bikes should be mounted on the large flying bases as that is what they come on now. I thought that was GWs last judgment as well (I think it was the terminators that struck that), I could be wrong.

Locally I tend to lean that way as far as judgment calls go. Must be based same as current models.

As for me personally, I would not really care for jet bikes because I know they used to come on the smaller ones. As for Destroyers...I don't remember the old ones, but I am fairly sure all the newer style ones came with the larger base.

I really hate this whole base size shenanigans. I've been trying to make some thunderwolf cavalry, and I am unsure what base I am supposed to put them on. Right now, they are one the terminator bases, because I know Canis is on the dreadnought base, but he is supposed to have the biggest wolf ever, right? What are we supposed to do if we go to a tournament with models that are ruled to be on an incorrect base, when we have already put all the time and effort to put sand and paint on the bases that they have?

I think its a real issue.

The only thunderwolf model is on the dread base, I would bet that is the standard base for the T-wolf cav.

Yeah, I am not sure what other companies may have done, but this is something that I think Wyrd was really smart about.

In the rulebook for Malifaux they actually state what size base a mini comes on or should be on. That way if you have one without a base, or are making your own you can be sure to get the right size base.

I was hoping JWolf would stop in and comment; I'm curious what the ruling is for the next BOLSCON.

I'm sending out some feelers to get some comments back.

Sorry I hadn't written in here; I responded to your email, though.

Basically, the larger bases are better for your assaulting, so they have obvious advantages. The smaller bases make it harder to multiple assault, but I do understand what a PITA they are to keep from falling over. I'd say that if you run the bikes themselves with 2" coherency from one another, not using the bases to get super spread out, you're fine.

(A new favorite!) Anon: I haven’t even bothered playing a game of 6th yet, cause I have read the rules, and actually understand how they interact with units. I know my armies no longer function how they should, and so I need to change them.
