Necrons: Bitter Defeat!
I played Sam-I-Am and his Orks-In-Progress not too long ago... and it was a fairly crushing defeat.
|
Ah, the balanced approach! |
|
I was testing (aren't I always) an idea... if one HBU with Veil is great - and it is - wouldn't two be better? I was also curious how a foot list would do. |
|
While I'm close to the action, the Wraiths and Scarabs are leading this little shindig. There was a bit of bad luck in the backfield, since I couldn't destroy a simple Trukk... you know, the one with the Nobs Mob inside! The Scarabs assaulted the Trukk, destroying it... to which the Nobs said, "Who cares?" |
|
I wasn't able to defeat the Bikes on the charge, and the counter was a bitch. Without the Destroyer Lord, the Wraiths combat punch is lacking. Still a great unit - you just can't... you know... throw them up the middle like I did! |
|
Bye, bye. |
|
This was a bit of a desperation move. I really needed another turn before using Veil, but the Orks were on me too quick. I needed a great turn here, but no mas. |
|
And here's why! I drifted a bit too close with the unpainted unit, so I was going to be countered by one unit or another. |
|
Here, I'd left the Lord behind to slow the advance. He did fine against Bikes, but the Power Klaws will do him in. |
|
The Trukk is wrecked; the Nobs? Not so much. |
That was game!
I liked Sam-I-Am's army, since I'm a fan of the mixed-arms approach. My army lost a lot of steam with the changes I'd made, so the double-Veil idea can be considered a failure.
At least with HBUs... uh.
I've got another idea to test...

Been working on my Necron lists as well, and one of the big match-up issues I see is a Battle Wagon and/or Nob Biker list as being a potential horrendous match-up. Even with Veils, which is what I am also looking at, you really can't escape the 28 inch charge range afforded by a Battlewagon + Ghaz.
It's somewhat ironic because Battlewagon Orks crushed the old Necron book too. :P
It is beatable you just have to have the right fire support. Annihilation barges for starter, a few heavy destroyers and commit yourself better with your wraiths.
Additionally use your veil cryptics with immortals rather than warriors and watch them shine!
Yeah, you really have to stay mobile against the orks, otherwise they'll swamp you. I had a pretty good record against them with a Destroyer fleet army last edition, but now that Destroyers ain't so great, I plan to try Annihilation barges backed up by Ghost Ark/Warrior fire to thin out their foot numbers.
If I can ever finish the damn Ghost Arks, that is. Those things take FOREVER to paint....

That was an awesome batrep. I really enjoyed reading it bro !
One of the Veil combos I tried in playtest was 7 Warriors and 2 Abyss-teks (one with Veil). 7 Warriors/Immortals allows you to deep strike placing a warrior/immortal in the center and 6 wrapped around him. This gives your tek's easy placement anywhere around this 3" diameter Warrior bubble. Great for placing the flamers in just the right spot to make up for bad DS rolls. To close to the enemy place them on a side. To far away place them on the outer ring for that extra reach. With their low Ld and Ap 1 orks just fry with double flamer placement. (Also good against Long Fangs, Devs, Oblits, etc.)
Dude you were playing Daniel not Sam ha ha ha

To be honest, the way I see it the battle played accoruding to fluff. Orks are probably the army least affected by Necron strengths. Night fighting? Who cares? Orks are all about cc anyway. Scarabs? Like scarabs are a threat. Normal BOLTERS can take down our trukks. We have Armor 6+ on troops anyway.
Any really, we can grot-screen if we want to stop scarabs (We get to shoot through them and so what if you get a 4+ cover...necron armor is already 4+. Even your best general gets no steal init vs us. The Old Ones knew what they were doing....
Seems like your finding the fundamental problem with the Necron book that all comer top tier list can dish out pretty easy.
Close combat and mobility is the bane of Necron's...
