Trying Out a Rust Technique

I read the step by step tutorial on developing rust over at 'A Gentleman's Ones' - and if you're not reading this blog, you should be.  Anyway, I made the comment I was going to try it out, and I did.  Here are the pictures of the test model, a Chaos Space Marine I found in my bitz box.  I glued an arm and Mad-Max-looking shoulder pad, then went to town.  Please note, I didn't follow the recipe exactly, but rather stippled the paints from memory, so my model doesn't look like his - my color tones came out too similar for the contrast that makes his stuff so cool.  Still, I'm very happy with the results and will continue to experiment with rusting in the future.

I really like the subtle way the rust enhances the Chaos feel of the model!

It looks ok, but I think you should add another color to give it some contrast. Maybe some red on the armor and make the rust look as if it is consuming the armor. You don’t have to do red that's just the first color that came to me. Keep playing with it you are on the right track.

Carlos - interesting that you say that, since a red color is the one I think I missed from the original recipe.

I agree.

It looks good and enhances the over all feeling of the miniature. Nice work!

I'm really, really pleased that you gave the recipe a go. He looks great. As Big Jim said, the effect you've achieved here is subtle, like the rust has really started to take hold while some areas remain more polished. It's a great effect. (particularly compared to my arrugginiti, who tend to be a bit overboard and fully/deeply rusted from top to bottom).

If I'm not mistaken, the reddish color you mentioned is "Dark Flesh." That's the color I use as a base, and it tends to show up as the dominant color on the finished product -while the silver is really just a reasonably small highlight.

It's a matter of preference, at the end of the day, and I really like the effect you've created here.

Also, I have to say, the stains on the model's head and on the icon are absolutely tremendous. I'm particularly fond of the way it runs down his eyes and face. Fantastic.

(A new favorite!) Anon: I haven’t even bothered playing a game of 6th yet, cause I have read the rules, and actually understand how they interact with units. I know my armies no longer function how they should, and so I need to change them.
