Bugs! |
Anyway, it prompted me to jot down some of my thoughts, which I'll apply to my Bugs! army. I enjoy Necrons, but for a variety of reasons I'm pulling out Sisters of Battle and Bugs! to work on over the next year. Not sure which will become my primary tournament army just yet, but I'm on record saying Tyranids are going to be brutal in 6th Edition...

...so I may have to put my money where my mouth is!
(It's funny Brent went this route - I've had to listen to him whine about wanting to reboot his Daemons for weeks.)
Here's my comment:
-I'm not sure I agree. I think Nids have brutal potential in 6th edition, though frankly my thinking is going a different direction from the thoughts Steve outlined in the article.
-Here's my opinion, for what it's worth:
-By far the best boost Nids got was busting out of the force org chart; at 2K, I'd open both but quick... primarily for the Elites section. Nids were always slot-boxed in Elites, their most important section.
-A Flyrant is great! But expensive; I'd supplement the army's striking power with Prime's, one minimum for the additional force org, but probably two - one each for Hormagaunts, perhaps.
-Go crazy in Elites! Take the Zoanthropes and Hive Guard you need. With the latter, I don't think squads of one are terrible, assuming there is a horde element - meaning big squads of Termis or Hormis - to take the brunt of an opponent's attention. Admittedly, this is an untested idea, and there are downsides to offering easy Kill Points in some missions. --Still, I plan to test this one.
-Lastly in Elites, having six slots to play with gives one the opportunity to take things like Venomthropes - to support hordes in the open - or Ymgarl - to scare the crap out of people. The psychological / positioning effect of the latter unit is probably better than their efficacy, but I could be very wrong. BBF swears by them, and he plays Nids more than I.
-Troops... what's not to like? As mentioned above, little bugs are a necessity. I'm not sure I'd leave with less than 90.
-Fast Attack... Harpies! I'll take two, please.
-Surprisingly Heavy Support, while getting better in 6th, is also the slot the Nids don't have to have. I'm only going to consider Big Bugs when I've filled out the army with the Little Bugs.
So, any thoughts?

I'm really hopeful for Nids in 6th. I know there are a lot of naysayers.. but I can see some great opportunities to take advantage of... just need to see how prevalent fliers become I guess..
Think there is much of a place for large mobs of Gargoyles? part of the small bug screen?
Oh yeah, I think Gargoyles will work just fine!
It's hard not to think they were underutilized in 5th; the pic I included was my Daemons vs Jay Woodcock's Nids, and those pink blighters absolutely ruined my day!
As Jump Infantry, they can take advantage of an additional attack at I10 - and that's good despite being strength 3. Against the type of foes they'll face, there's a strong chance they'll cause a casualty; nothing to sniff at when facing, say, Marines. It's even better against Eldar of both types, and of course you're looking at three or more casualties at that point.
Still, it's going to be the screening and movement tactics that will see you get the most of this unit.
Let me know how you do, sir. :)
Taking out your SoB and your tyranids? What a coincidence, that's what I'm doing as well. I just need a pair of tervigons and maybe a flyrant for my nids but my SoB should be good as they are now.
What are you thinking about in terms of SoB allies? Tonight I'm doing my first 6th ed game using them with SW allies (rune priest, GH, scouts, long fangs) and I'm curious to see what the SW allies will add to the army.
For the Sisters I'm thinking Guard or Black Templar, the latter largely due to fluff. Space Wolves are also a good option, but frankly they'd be good for anyone!
I will let you know for sure my man.. Definitely agree on the screening/movement stuff.
Hammer of Wrath on Gargoyles is just funny...
When I got home from work earlier I fished my Nids out.. can't wait to get cracking on them again!
There is not one way only to win with Nidz. The Overmind approves this thread.
:D

I'm really hoping nids end up becoming a viable choice with 6th. They were my first army and I really want to see them return to glory. I've already had to face the Swarmlord with endurance and Iron arm and that was horrifying. I can definitely see psychic spam nids becoming popular for sure.
