Battle Report, Chaos vs Salamanders

It's been awhile since I've done a 40K Battle Report, largely because it's been some time since there have been two painted armies on the board at the FLGS!  Things in my area of the woods have been in flux, and it's more likely I'll bring you Infinity reports than 40K ones in the near future.

Still, last Saturday I got to duke it out with a new local, Spencer.  (Haven't gotten around to naming him yet - it'll happen.)  Anyway, I won't waste too much page-space on words; instead it's big pictures, little captions time.

I'm playing a basic CSM list, which I discussed a few posts back.  Spencer has a nifty Vulcan list, naturally chock full of Melta and Flamer weapons.

Video: Terrain as Per the Book in a 2K Game

The Mighty Mighty Carlos and I played a game last week at 2K; me with Sisters and allied Eldar and he with double Bastions and Imperial Fists.

My 2K Sisters has four squads of Sisters of Battle, four Exorcists, Jacobus with Crusaders and Assassins, Celestine, a Farseer (for psychic defense and jankiness), Pathfinders, and a Fortification with a Quad Gun.

Gak! 'Net Down, Disconnected!

As the title suggests, I've been off the grid since last week.  A lightning storm killed my internet.

And my couch.  Stupid electric old-person recliner - I was perfectly content with manual models.  Now the recliners are in a permanent state of... excitement.

I won't bore you with my "the ISP took freakin' forever story" as you no doubt have one of your own.  Getting *SELF-EDIT* by utilities is a Universal Truth, along with, "Underwear is never clean in an accident, so why wear it?"

Hey, I don't make the rules.

This is a short post, largely because the technician just left and I have to head back to work.  Here are some pics to try and begin catching up on my posting.

Brent's Losing Streak..!

Yup, I'm on a losing streak!  Exciting stuff, that!

I mentioned in a previous post that I've been playing a lot of City Fight with a lot of different armies - and just having a blast!  Naturally I took way too many pictures, but rather than let them get lost in other content I decided to drop a summary of...

...Brent's Losing Streak!  *key creepy music*

Ah, Brotherhood Fangs overlooking the field... what could go wrong?

Battle Report: City Fight 1500, Wolves vs Fists

I played the Mighty Mighty Carlos and his (Vulkan) Imperial Fists... and I'm just saying, one day he should actually finish this army.

Bjorn the Fell-Claw showing off the right stuff against the Imperial Fists.

Brotherhood Update: Scouts and more Troops

I'm continuing to add to the Brotherhood, with the idea I'll be able to test and play practically every major build in the book... then I'll start on the units for the Brotherhood Shrikers or the Brotherhood Assault Angels or something.

Stolen Content: BrassScorpion's Marines!

I did a (I thought) nifty tutorial on Bell yesterday, but perhaps the coolest part was a link dumped in the comments by one BrassScorpion, a Dakka Dakka, er... dude.

Dakka-Dude?

Some I'm stealing it to pass on to you!

Hard Boyz Round One, Game Two

Yes, yes, yes - I'm perfectly aware that I've not been updating Strictly Average enough... but have you listened to the weather? The heat wave over the midwest is unreal, and my place of residence in North Texas is breaking all manner of records. Between that and working double duty at the hospital, I've been flat worn out.

Which isn't to say I haven't been working on stuff; rather, I just haven't been blogging about it yet! I've got a ton of material, just waiting to use. For now, let's roll in to a quick battle report.

Pretty awesome, right?  Game two was against Vulcan marines.  Objectives were the key, and my opponent's army is a good counter to my bad intentions.  He has the Godhammer hang out in the center, where it'll be a lot of work to break through AV 14, and his two Iron Clads can hold my army up for days if I don't deal with them carefully.

Adepticon Championships, Game 1

I have a lot to say about the games I played at the Adepticon, both from a generalist and army specific standpoint... I just don't have time to say it all right now!  To that end, I'm going to quickly cover Game 1 and we'll use it as a starting point to the the rest of the conversation.

My opponent was a true gentleman, a very nice dude and sportsman.  This is always good, since I'm usually a wreck for the first round of any event.  (It's a combination of nerves and a bad leg.)

Video Battle Report: Chaos Vs Imperium Team Game

The only 40K I've been playing in the last month has been in preparation for a team tournament at the Comic Asylum.  Here's Game III, where Big Whit and I test our new ideas against the Mighty Mighty Carlos and the Professor.

I actually have reservations about showing this video with the tournament only a week or so away; I know at least a few dudes who'll compete read this blog... but I'm a slave to the Blogosphere.  What can I say?

So it's Daemons and Chaos Space Marines Vs Blood Angels and Flesh Tearers... and be warned, there's *SELF-EDIT* involved.

Taking the Bait: Dishing 'Advice'

I started the new job this week - yea me.  The money is okay but the benefits are unreal.

Yes, I sold out.  Big Brother is watching me.  I work for the State.

Strictly Average is taking a bit of a backseat this week since it'll take me a bit to develop new blogging routines, but I did want to take a moment to address some questions.  The last post was one of those awesome rarities: the comments were far more interesting than the article.

Not because articles are universally great but because comments are hard to come by.  People live busy lives; they'll read your stuff, but they're probably not slowing down to chat about it - that's true of every blog.

By the way... King: You're always free to comment with whatever is on your mind!  I know where it comes from, so don't sweat it, my man.

Daemons and Marines Vs Blood Angels...

... a Team Game Battle Report!  Please note, I'm formatting the report in a way I hope organizes the action; let me know if it helps.

Today's Battle Report is the followup game from yesterday's Video Battle Report... and while you won't have cause to regret listening to the Professor's antics, I find I must warn you ahead of time that one of these pictures is so shocking, so outrageous...

...that I'll never look at my poor Horror in the same way again.  Click the 'read more' button to continue.

Video Battle Report: Team Game Practice

It's been awhile since I've dropped a video battle report on an unsuspecting audience.  We're practicing for a team tournament at the Comic Asylum, a new favorite venue in the Metroplex after the last trip Whit and I made.  Anyway, it's me and Big Whit Vs the Mighty Mighty Carlos and the Professor.

The Professor made my job difficult, no doubt... he was extra chatty and constantly interrupted the video.  Some of you will find it funny and some of you annoying.  You've been warned. :)

Brotherhood Update: Bjorn the Fell-Claw

As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of the old stuff - it doesn't hold a candle to the new but it has tons of character.  This is the old Chaos Dreadnought, RTB-1 era.

Naturally it was purchased and set aside for my Brotherhood project!  I'm going to use it as a Counts-As Bjorn, complete with Plasma Cannon and a bad attitude.

The Old Space Marine Painting Guide

Here's a picture of the old Space Marine Painting Guide, which I acquired at some point in the early 90's.  It is, without doubt, the most inspiring and thumbed-through Games Workshop supplement I've ever owned.  I love this thing.

It featured the old RTB1, Beakie-Marines, which feature in my Homage army...

...speaking of, it's currently being reworked, thanks in part to some additions from BSMoove of A Gentleman's Ones!  Keep an eye out in the future.

And yes, it does mean I'm working on 3 Marine variants at once.  I'll narrow it down as time goes on and end up finishing one before the others.

But I digress.  Point is I've read this book cover to cover thousands of times and it's high time I pay it its due.  My faux Storm Wardens - and what the heck should I call them? - will be painted with heraldry and such from this guide.

Da Boyz GT, Game IV (And a Bit of Controversy)

"What?" I hear you say.  "Where is Game III?  Did I miss something?"

Nope.  It's just Game III was my devastating loss to the ultimate event winner, Greg Sparks.  That game is so loaded with lessons it's worth giving it its proper due.

Anyway, my game was against a Space Wolves player, a fine fellow whose name I can't remember.  I thought it was printed on his army list, but no dice.  I just checked.  A few things happened in this game which soured an otherwise hard-fought affair... we'll get to them in due course.  I didn't say this at the time, but I actually greatly admired his bearing and continued cheerfulness, even though I know he wasn't happy after the game.

Game II: Brother Captain James

Okay, here's the Battle Report for Game II of the Da Boyz GT in Rochester, New York.

As an aside, I got an email from Kris, the Blood Angels player from Game I.  I'm going to reply more specifically in a blog post, probably tomorrow, but I wanted to mention one thing.  I referred twice to his inexperience but I wasn't more specific than that.  I alluded to it, but here it is straight out: I meant his inexperience playing in GT's.  The dude knew how to rock his army, but nobody I know does as well as they want in their first major Indy.  It's a different scene.

I got both my preferred drop and my preferred turn choice.  Here's BCJ's setup, and on Turn 1 he shoots across the board, spreading out his army to make the drops difficult for me.  The Mission is Lost Artifact, so we had to locate the objective before fighting over it.

Here I am playing Brother Captain James from the Battle for Salvation.  I wanted to ask him Jawaballs-specific questions, but there wasn't much time...

Video: Daemons Vs Space Wolves

Well, I'm leaving for Da Boyz tomorrow (Friday), so wish me luck. I'm taking the laptop and camera, so tune in for updates. Until then, here's the last test game...

Old, Old School Dreadnoughts

I've got Space Crusade and my old Homage army on the mind, for reasons which shall soon be obvious!

I've got some lead-up Da Boyz material coming up tomorrow, then I guess I'd better have something in the pipe in case I can't blog from the event this weekend.  Except you know I'm going to blog from the event this weekend!

Anyway, I painted these forever ago for my Harbingers Space Marines.  They've since gone away, and these will too.  Into the bath!

Rupert's Black Templars Land Raider

On Blogging Part VIII on Blood of Kittens today highlights the work of Rupert, a talented speed-painter from the United Kingdom.  I wasn't able to use this picture due to its size so I saved it to show off here.  Make sure you check out the article and drop a comment.
(A new favorite!) Anon: I haven’t even bothered playing a game of 6th yet, cause I have read the rules, and actually understand how they interact with units. I know my armies no longer function how they should, and so I need to change them.

Strictly Average: 'cause 6-inches is all you get.

Stalking Jawaballs since 2009.

Jawaballs: "My butt just tightened up."

Brent, preferred 2-to-1 over Not Brent in a recent, scientific poll.

Brent: emptied the Kool Aid and DRINKING YOUR MILKSHAKE with an extra-long straw.

Unicorns don't exist.

Home of the Stormbuster, the Dyson Pattern Storm Raven.

I'm a comment whore and this whore is getting no play.

Not Brent hurts Brent's feelings.

I think, therefore I blog.

"You should stop writing for everyone else and worry about your crappy blog." - Anon.

Not Brent has been spotted lurking around with a green marker.

He's not like a bad guy from a cartoon, all devious but never quite evil, Not Brent is bad beans, man, bad beans.

Dethtron: "Again I feel obliged to remind you that trying to sound smart only works if you are."

MVB: "I am not one to join the unwashed masses of self-titled 40k experts out there distributing advice from their blogs about exactly how your list should be built..."

Shiner Bock on tap: that's how I choose hotels.

Strictly Average: The Home of Hugs and Gropings.

Don't feed the trolls!

MoD: "Welcome to Brent's head."

Competitive is Consistent.

Dethtron: "...you could use that extra time to figure out a way to get your panties unbunched and perform a sandectomy on your vagina."

Dethtron: “When calling someone an idiot, it's generally best to avoid making grammatical mistakes.”

Warboss Stalin: "You know, if it actually WAS funny, maybe I wouldn't mind."

Mike Brandt: "It's not a successful bachelor party if you don't misplace someone".

"The Master Manipulator (every store needs one): "...now, enough stroking."

Kirby: "I don't know about gropings. Seriously, Brent, keep it in the pants, please."

Loquacious: "No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get Hugs & Gropings or Stalks Jawaballs into Brent's little tribute."

Captain Kellen: "I rate this article a Brent on the Faith Hill to Nancy Pelosi scale!"

Drathmere: "Come for the balls, stay for the Brent? Kind of disturbing, man."

Go no further, lest thee see something thine eyes would fain look past!

Isabelle: "So, thank you for supporting your local and not so local unicorns. A noble gesture like that can show some scared kids out there that they don't have to hide from everyone and it's ok to be who they really are."

There is nothing more interesting than We The People... in all our beautiful, ugly glory!

On Internet Advice: You see, I have an almost religious belief that's it's a huge, colossal waste of time.

...I think I'll call it the Gun Shy Pattern Stormbuster, because after the Internet destroyed my first humble effort, I find I'm a bit worried about the reaction to this one.

Lauby: "Is it left over from that time you thought that you could just complete step one 12 times to meet the mandates of that court order?"

Not Brent: "I guess we'll have to read on and find out. Signed, Not Brent. Especially today."

Cynthia Davis: "I think the scrolling text is from Glen Beck's new book."

Grimaldi: "Spamming certain units creates interesting possibilities but also fatal weaknesses."

Purgatus: "Math can inform decisions. It cannot make decisions."

Thoughts? Comments? Hugs and gropings?

You'd be that much quicker to figure out what I mean when I refer to a Unicorn if I covered it in a rainbow flag.

SinSynn: (To Brent) "Curse you and your insidious influence on the internets..."

Dave G (N++): "You know you're an internet celebrity when your following is more akin to tabloids."

I prefer the term Internet Personality (or IP) myself, seeing as how I coined it.

Lauby: "Your attempt to humanize him as failed. I feel nothing but scorn for his beard - it's like a warcrime or something."

BBF: "I've always thought you are a good player but I finally figured out that you are a great player. It's hard to see sometimes because your personality is engaging, sincere and quite charming - to me that is kind of a rare combination."

'Clearly cheating?' I didn't misspeak: you jumped to conclusions. If you'd like to apologize I'll be happy to send you an autographed picture of my ass.

Ass.

I thought I was doing alright before I realized I was losing.

Age and treachery beats youth and vigor every time.
