The 15-Minute Miniature

I finished the 2nd model for my (very) infrequent painting series on Blood Angels by Jawaballs, a Witch Hunter Inquisitor.  I try to stretch my painting wings in that series and master some of the brush techniques practiced by experienced painters.  It's fair to say I'm having mixed success, since what was supposed to be my second model in the series was my light-sourced Dark Eldar Archon...

That didn't work out so well.




Still, it's hard to stray too far from my speed painting roots.  Many of you know I keep a test miniature of some sort handy to paint on while I'm waiting through the drying time of whatever project I happen to find myself working on.

The above Space Marine is one such I did today.

It's more than nothing special, it's strictly average (heh) in practically every way, being tabletop quality only.  Still, I painted him in about 15 minutes, not including drying time for the one wash I used.

So that's yet another model that fits in no existing army, but I still think it's worthwhile.  I practice little trips and combinations and such - ways to improve tone or hide flaws or whatnot.

Anyway, there you go.  Test miniatures; give it a go!

    looks damn good for 15 minutes, my man. Damn good.

    Now if I could just convince you to ditch the Fruity Pebbles mix you use for basing, I think it'd be even better.

    You can paint like that in 15mins? It takes me hours to get something noway near as good as that...

    I'd say my basing *does* look better though...

    it may just be that this guy has been painted over several times as a test mini, but there appears to be some bad juju happening with your undercoat, giving you some weird texture. I'd say it could be humidity related, but you live in Texas....

    DT: No, you're right. This model was poorly base coated black the first time, so I sprayed him again.

    It's one of the reasons I chose him - I don't use perfect miniatures in these throw-away schemes!

    Awesomepaintjob.com is a good source. I agree about the base...he looks like he's standing on the bowl edge of a cauldron of vegi soup.

    The comments on the base really crack me up. I agree and I have never really liked them, but that is the same basing material and technique that Brent uses on almost every other mini he paints.

    This is the first time I have heard comments.

    Plus I am curious how you are counting your time? Are you talking 15 minutes start to finish or 15 minutes of actual brush time (ie painting in spurts while working on another project).

    Nonsense. No one can paint a mini in 15 minutes. You might be able to set up your paint station in that amount of time, but that's it
    (I have to tell myself these things...no one can do that, yeah, yeah, that's right...impossible).
