GW's Summer Supplement: Storm of Magic

I don't normally do these 'here's what GW is doing on the horizon' fanboi posts, but this one strikes me as interesting.  You can read 'interesting' as 'whose idea was this, anyway?'

Reason?  Does anyone actually think magic ISN'T strong enough?  What, we need a supplement in order to see the Winds of Magic devastate a battlefield?

"But Not Brent, we're going to see epic creatures stroll the fields of battle!"

To which I'd say, "Listen Mouthbreather, I'll spend my ten quid on the plastic sorcerer kit, upgrade him to level fourteen, and waste your upgraded Snuffleupagus."

In our area, nothing killed a game faster than the realization magic is overpowered - and it took only one Purple Sun to do it.

Actually, moms showing up to pick up their little darlings kills games plenty quick, but you get the idea.

This bores me - I'm out.

  1. Nothing killed Apocalypse faster than D-Weapon spam, and nothing will kill whatever the name for this is faster than even more ridiculous magic.

If this isn't handled well, it could be a major turnoff to players.

  2. Where's the trust? GW didn't grow so big by making a pig's ear, did it?

  3. WTF, 8th edition just came out last summer and GW has only put out two army books - why in the hell do we need a supplement instead of updated army books? I really thought things were on the right track with 8th edition.

I guess they want to sell $50 monster kits to people whose list dosent have giant sphinxes & spiders.

  4. Maybe my opinion is colored by the fact that I'm one of those bastard Lizardmen players that runs a decked out Slann at 2,000 points, but I don't understand the hate for magic.

Let me also qualify this by saying I never played Fantasy before 8th edition so it's all I know.

I actually really enjoy the magic phase. It can be quite strategic, trying to bait someone into dispelling something and getting that cast off that cripples a block. For me there's a lot of thought that goes into my spell choice (especially the order in which it is cast).

For all the bitching that goes on, there are still plenty of instances where X sorcerer doesn't make minimum casting value and twiddles his thumbs for the rest of the phase.

Does the state of the game favor builds with a magic presence more than those without? Sure. I'd argue that if you're setting yourself up to miss out on an entire PHASE of the game in any game, you'd be at a disadvantage. That's what building a balanced list is about. Being as effective in every facet of the game as you can.

The only place I can sympathize is with people whose only army (or armies) have nonexistent magic, especially if they are in dire need of an update.

If that's the case, you can use your Wood Elves/Brets/Necrons as a proxy for something new and different. If you find something you like then convert or buy a new army.

Or don't and play another game. Magic does not an unplayable game make, nor models a cage... Or something like that.

  5. Honestly, I'm just looking forward to the big plastic monsters. I need more wacky things to make bizarro Daemon Princes out of.

  6. The good thing about been a dwarf player is that this suppliment will have nothing in it of use to me, dwarves don't do magic or monsters but they do anti-magic really well.

  7. When will you write a post about your hilarious podcast? Seem you are gyping your 40K buddies by not mentioning your intelligent discourse and fart humor. I just love anything you do. I love you so much...so much.

  8. Here here. I was dumbfounded when this supplement was announced. It's just a further tumble off the cliff in my opinion. I've played the game since 4th edition and seen some great and rough times with it, but 8e and this addition are the last straw. Buh Bye Fantasy! I'm off to greener pastures in GW's specialist range, Spartan Games, etc...
