Here's a picture of the old Space Marine Painting Guide, which I acquired at some point in the early 90's. It is, without doubt, the most inspiring and thumbed-through Games Workshop supplement I've ever owned. I love this thing.It featured the old RTB1, Beakie-Marines, which feature in my Homage army...
...speaking of, it's currently being reworked, thanks in part to some additions from BSMoove of A Gentleman's Ones! Keep an eye out in the future.
And yes, it does mean I'm working on 3 Marine variants at once. I'll narrow it down as time goes on and end up finishing one before the others.
But I digress. Point is I've read this book cover to cover thousands of times and it's high time I pay it its due. My faux Storm Wardens - and what the heck should I call them? - will be painted with heraldry and such from this guide.
Here's a start... and it's still a test model, so I'm experimenting with techniques. Anyway, this veteran is painted with a 'stained arm' to signify the honor of holding the Battle Standard - which I'll eventually add. This is straight out of the guide!
The highlight is way too harsh on that shoulder pad. I'm also trying to sort out what color I'll be painting the weapons. I don't mind the blue on the original model, nor do I mind the white on the veteran... but I'm still not sure what the army will sport. I'm considering a neutral gray but I worry that won't contrast with the silver enough.
An extreme close-up always makes you appreciate Heavy Metal articles. I've always had difficulty painting Marines, since the flat spaces illustrate my poor blending - anyway, this Marine is about as clean as I've done.

Thoughts?
I have fond memories of this booklet, I too read the print off the pages! I'm not too sure if it was in this, or in an old WD, but I remember an example of painting Blood Angels armor. I remember mixing the specs they gave, but instead of the slightly terracotta color the photo had, it turned out almost pink! most frustrating. An echo of what was to come in later WD articles, I think lol! I miss the 'eavy metal section!

ReplyDeleteSince you're using so much strong colour on your marines, I'd go with flat black weapon casings.
ReplyDeleteGrey would fade into the metallic torso at a distance, but black will stand out nicely.
I have the newer version of this book, as well as the Astartes guide. I use them pretty often.
